Working Principle of Handheld XRF Metal Analyzer AXR Terra900

Publish Date 2021-08-09
The handheld XRF metal analyzer is an energy-type X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, which is one of the two types X-ray fluorescence analyzers used in elemental analysis. Different from the WDXRF, the handheld EDXRF instrument analyzes the elements of the material through the energy of characteristic X-rays type and content.

Element is a general term for a class of atoms. An atom consists of a nucleus and an electron. The closer the electron is to the nucleus, the stronger the binding effect and the lower the energy level. The further to the outer layer, the weaker the electrons are bound, and the higher the energy level. The outer layer electrons enter the inner orbital to fill the vacancies, and the excess energy is released in the form of radiation. This radiation is characteristic X-rays with specific energy.

In addition, the intensity of fluorescent X-rays has a certain relationship with the content of the corresponding elements, according to which, the quantitative analysis of elements can be carried out. The X-ray detector converts the optical signal of the X-ray characteristic spectral line of the sample element into an electrical signal that is easy to measure to obtain the characteristic information of the element to be detected. Therefore, the handheld XRF analyzer is mainly used to analyze the element type and content of the sample, which is usually composed of an X-ray tube, a detector and a signal processing system.
